Getting Your Child To Sleep Well
It is very common for new parents to be concerned about their newborn’s sleep habits. You will be able to sleep more soundly and more regularly once your baby has a regular sleep pattern. It takes infants a little time to develop consistent sleep patterns. You should begin to see your baby’s sleeping habits become more regular around 3 months of age. Until that time, there are a few things you can do to help encourage the development of consistent, regular sleeping habits.
When an infant is born it requires a lot of sleep. Parents have to be very aware of sleeping and eating habits and requirements in newborns because these elements are so essential to the child’s development. You will notice that even though your baby sleeps a lot, it is usually not for long periods of time. Baby’s wake when they need to eat or need a diaper change and those needs must be tended to on demand. It will be easiest on you if the baby sleeps in a bassinet or small crib as a newborn. This will also allow you to more closely observe the baby’s sleep patterns.
It is fine to encourage your baby to sleep alone, but you may want to start with a crib or bassinet in your room. This keeps the baby nearby and allows you to respond in case of emergency. The best way to make a baby comfortable is to hold it closely, comforting the child with the warmth and love of a parent. You can also swaddle the baby in a blanket to make him feel warm, secure, and comfortable.
If your baby refuses to sleep alone there is no need to worry. Babies usually grow out of this stage and can be helped along with a little practice and training. One of the most important things to remember is that each child is different. What works with your first infant may not work with your second. Adjust your work with the infants sleep habits according to the infant. One good way to begin getting your infant in the habit of sleeping alone is to swaddle him comfortably and put him down alone once or twice a day. I wouldn’t recommend letting the baby cry for an extended period of time, but you may find that if the baby cries when you lay him down, the tears may quickly subside and he will drift off to sleep. It will not be long before there are no tears at all. It is never a good idea to allow the infant to cry and cry without responding. This teaches the child learned helplessness. In teaching your baby to sleep you must find the right balance for you and your child.
When your baby awakes at night it is usually because of hunger. As your baby grows and begins to eat more, sleep duration will become longer and longer. In the meantime, there are a few additional things you can do to help your baby sleep more soundly. Keep the baby’s room dark and quiet. Make sure the baby has adequate time to get used to her surroundings. Avoid stimulating the baby before bedtime and try to keep things in the baby’s environment quiet during sleeping times.
